Overlooking Kutchan town is Asahigaoka park. Winter visitors will no doubt remember that the park is dominated by an huge ancient ski jump which is a relic from the 1972 winter games staged in Sapporo. In winter the park has a small ski area and cross country ski course run by Kutchan town – in the summer months has a couple kids parks and some hiking trails. This year Kutchan town took the bold move of constructing mountain biking trail. All around the world and especially in resort areas local councils constructing community trails is not unusual but here in Japan….it is.

The trail was designed by a specialist Swiss company ALLEGRA. The new trail is termed as a FLOW trail as it is designed to allow riders to push and pull over a series of rolls into and out of built up corners while flowing downhill. Check out our video taken yesterday which will hopefully give you an idea of what it is like.

At this stage the trail is only officially open to the public between 9:00 and 15:00 on the following dates while Kutchan town studies management and usage of the trail:

September 25
October 1,2,8,9,10

The flow trail in our opinion is brilliant. It can be ridden at your own pace and skill level….all you need is a mountain bike and a helmet and you are good to go. It is worth noting common sense is required when using the flow trail and children must always be under adult supervision. Fingers crossed the trail will be open to the public next summer anytime 7 days a week. We salute this fantastic initiative by Kutchan Town!
