Even with the out-of-the-way location, it’s remarkable how busy this little bakery-come-café, B.C.C White Rock, can be. There were a surprising amount of familiar faces coming and going in the space of an extended lunch break. And it’s no wonder why people are making the trek.
Their baguettes and sandwiches are the definition of simple, bordering on spartan – plain baguette with simple fillings. This minimal approach allows the flavour of the bread to really shine, instead of being little more than a vessel to deliver wads of sauce and flavouring. The ham and cheese baguette is just that – a fresh, super crusty baguette with some ham and cheese. The pork pate is little more than some fantastic in-house pate on a bed of lettuce and topped with several small pickled gherkins – simple. So, not only are they delicious, they are also cheap, with baguettes ranging from ¥500 to ¥650.
White Rock specialises in baguettes and sandwiches, but that is not all that they do, they also have soups and pastas, as well as a collection of incredibly tempting sweets. They also make a mean coffee with their enormous Italian coffee machine and comforting hot chocolate – both available to go.
No need to worry if you can’t make it out to their café on the outskirts of Kutchan as BCC White Rock set up shop in Tamashii Bar in Hirafu every morning selling an assortment of sandwiches, baguettes and sweets.
