Talk about a fusion sport! In 2012 a bright young Canadian decided to make ice-skating a little more extreme by taking it off the flat skating rink, and moving it to a terrain park, blending ice-skating with inline-skating and creating Ice Cross.

Last year was the first official Red Bull Freeze, which was held in Odori Park in Sapporo just after the Sapporo Snow Festival. Interestingly, they used the leftover snow from the Snow Festival to create the terrain!

This year they plan to make it even bigger and have moved it to the ski resort Snow Cruise Onze, between Otaru and Sapporo.

The event has also been extended and will run over three weekends. It will open February 1st, and have two jam sessions – one on February 1st, and another February 8th between 6PM and 7:30PM. Then on February 15th there will be an actual contest taking place between 5PM and 7PM.

It is also open to those with enough bravado/skill between the 3PM to 9PM February 1st to February 15th (but closed on Monday Feb 3rd and Feb 10th). Of course, this is all subject to weather conditions – too much snow and the course can’t
be ridden, too warm and there won’t be solid ice!

Watch the video from last year’s event – It looks bonkers, but would certainly be entertaining!
