As the season draws to a close there is no denying that Niseko is a winter paradise. A lesser known fact is that the Niseko region is a paradise all year long.
Looking forward to the coming summer months without a doubt one of the most spectacular and enjoyable summer activities out there is Sea Kayaking.
For those visiting Niseko in winter it may be hard to imagine but within and hours drive to the north of Niseko lies the spectacular Shakotan Peninsular renown for it’s incredible coast line and stunning water colour know as ‘Shakotan Blue’. The water temperature is quite mild from mid to June until mid to late September.
Last summer we joined a day tour in July with Toyru and couple of friends. The tour included transport, equipment, lunch and expert guidance. The trip departed Niseko around 9 and got back into town around 4:00.
As a first time Kayaker i was a bit worried but the Kayak was surprisingly stable and with a few simple pointers from Takanashi-san quickly felt comfortable and confident on the open water.
Perhaps the best way to get a feel for the trip is to check out the video below. Takanashi-san was kind enough to carry my drone on his Kayak which allowed me to capture some surreal footage during our lunch break.
