Niseko Snow Report, 24 December 2016

by | Dec 24, 2016 | Snow Reports | 0 comments

*4.5cm has fallen in the last 24 hours in Niseko. At 7:00 today the temperature was -6°C. The snow arrived alright…in the form of a massive blizzard! The whole of Hokkaido was thrown into chaos yesterday. Sapporo city recorded over 90cm of snowfall! Transport and infrastructure ground to a halt and the airport was closed. Here in Niseko the weather changed around midday with the rain turning to snow and the wind slowly building. By night fall a full on blizzard was raging and it continued throughout the night. It is always tricky to say how much snow has fallen when it is being blown side ways… What is easy to say is that there will be some massive wind drifts out there today. The wind has dropped and it is snowing lightly. It is difficult to say what lifts will be running this morning so please keep and eye on the current lift status. For those who make it on the mountain please be careful. The conditions will be extremely variable with deep deposits of beautiful wind blown powder and nasty sections rock hard of exposed ice. Chill out and enjoy your skiing and boarding but don’t push it. We still need more snow to totally send it with abandon! HO HO HO!

360niseko Snow Station Readings Disclaimer

The 360niseko snow station is now in a new location for the 2016-17 between Hirafu and Higashiyama at 200m in altitude. There is 27m difference in altitude to last seasons position in lower Hirafu village 227m. *The Hirafu Gondola is at 305m. Please be aware that this new reading is NOT in Hirafu village but a few kilometers down the road. There is always a deviation how and where the snow falls – the area is famous for micro climates and mini weather patterns. Some days there may be 10cm in Annupuri and 25cm in Hanazono and vice versa – some days 30cm of fresh snowfall comes down everywhere!! Altitude plays a big part as well so please don’t take the 360niseko snow readings as being definitive – the readings are what is outside our house on the ground.
