As the season edges closer another tell tale sign of the approaching snowfall in Niseko. Yukimushi or Snow Insects usually appear within a week of snowfall and have a very short life cycle. Yukimushi are tiny at around 5-7mm. The best time to find Yukimushi seems to be in the afternoon and if you come across a large group of them they do almost look like snow especially if they are backlit from the sun. Right now here in Niseko the autumn colors are starting to peak at village level and pretty much disappeared higher up on the mountain. This week the temperature looks too warm for any snowfall at lower elevations but we could see another dusting on Mt.Yotei…or even Mt.Annupuri.
