Niseko Snow Report, 28 January 2017

by | Jan 28, 2017 | Snow Reports | 0 comments

*9cm has fallen in the last 24 hours in Niseko. At 7:00 today the temperature was -5°C. This morning we have cold temperatures, light snowfall and strong winds. Yesterdays early morning rain did not last long thankfully however the snow that did come down was very wet and heavy. With this mornings cold temperatures we have some serious freeze thaw conditions with yesterdays warmer conditions softening the snow and overnight the snow freezing again. This morning we have a solid lump of ice/snow on our snow station! This is bad news for the snow pack generally and will create a massive layer of unstable snow. Around town please be careful around buildings and trees as heavy chunks of ice/snow will be randomly coming down! Up on the mountain is is anyones guess what the snow will be like but extreme caution is advised. Please read the avalanche report and stay within bounds. That being said it is unlikely many lifts will be operating this morning due to the gale force winds. Later in the day the wind may moderate and there should be some sweet deposits of wind blown powder up for grabs.

360niseko Snow Station Readings Disclaimer

The 360niseko snow station is now in a new location for the 2016-17 between Hirafu and Higashiyama at 200m in altitude. There is 27m difference in altitude to last seasons position in lower Hirafu village 227m. *The Hirafu Gondola is at 305m. Please be aware that this new reading is NOT in Hirafu village but a few kilometers down the road. There is always a deviation how and where the snow falls – the area is famous for micro climates and mini weather patterns. Some days there may be 10cm in Annupuri and 25cm in Hanazono and vice versa – some days 30cm of fresh snowfall comes down everywhere!! Altitude plays a big part as well so please don’t take the 360niseko snow readings as being definitive – the readings are what is outside our house on the ground.
