No one likes that guy who talks about the weather, but it’s unavoidable in a ski town. January has been phenomenal, with nearly 300cm of accumulated snowfall in just 12 days – yes, if you do the maths that is nearly 30cm of snow per day so far this year. It has been snowing for the last 20 plus days, and the forecast shows no end to this onslaught in sight.
The snow ploughs are working overtime just to keep the town running, as streets turn into narrow trenches.
Trees buckle under the strain.
Parked cars slowly morph into the landscape.
It’s a full time job relocating all of this frozen precipitation, this white gold, with snow blowers humming away all day.
There will be superlatives written, Snowpocalypse, Powmageddon, Greatest January On Record, but at the end of the day, this is life in one of the snowiest ski resorts in the world. This is another January in Niseko. I’m sorry, Corona Extra, but this is where I’d rather be!
