Jumping the Gun on Mt.Yotei

by | Nov 11, 2014 | News, Winter Sports | 0 comments

Our beloved 1,898m high Mt.Yotei always beckons and on the 23rd of February after some excellent snowfall the timing seemed good for a hike.

Unfortunately things don’t always go as planned and on this day the clouds came in from around 1400 meters and our group could see very little for the rest of the hike – but the snow was great!

It's still good!

It’s still good!

Besides the weather closing in we carried on to the summit as best we could hoping it would miraculously clear.

After some internal bickering as to the best route through the whiteout we made it to the summit in around 5 hours.

After waiting as long as we could stand it we all basically scraped and slipped our way down about 400 meters until we could see and actually ride the 50+cm layer of perfect pow.

As you can see the snow was excellent and we still managed to have a great time but the moral of the story…. watch the weather carefully and take your time because check out the next day. DOH!!!
