Scott from Niseko Snowmobile Adventures (NSA) gave us a call the other day to see if we wanted to head into the back country for some petrol fuelled fun on his snowmobiles. There was no way we could refuse an offer like that and this is how it went down…
The Sled
The snowmobiles are Polaris 600cc two stroke machines that put out 100bhp at the track, which is more than enough poke to get you moving quickly.
The great thing about these snowmobiles is they have a long track that’s designed for deep snow, which will be a big help when you get out into the Niseko back country.

Briefing
Before being let loose Scott gave us a full run down on how to handle the 240kg beast and his explanation on how to handle them was the best I have heard to date. Using a snowboarding analogy finally made the penny drop!
Going out into the snow covered wilderness comes with risk, so all safety aspects are covered off by Scott who has avalanche management and wilderness first aid qualifications.
After that we had a blind test to check we knew where all the controls were and then we were off.

The Ride
The fact you can ride fast going up, down or on the flat gives snowmobiling that little something extra when it comes to having fun in the snow. But the big difference with an NSA tour is you get to see some stunning scenery (take a look at the panorama on the NSA location page) and you will see what I mean.

Want to ride the sledges too?
If you fancy getting on a NSA snowmobile tour for the first time or already know what it’s all about get in contact with Scott to book a half day out in the snow for ¥30,000 and you won’t be disappointed.
If you have a video camera you can strap on your head to the sledge you can shoot a bit of video…
Final thought
Get the A-frame stance down and your body will thank you for it after a half day in the saddle.
